Antti Paalanen // experimental folk

SAT 19 Jan, 23:45 @ Der AA-Kerk

Antti Paalanen creates his wild music on the simple accordions so familiar to Finnish folk music. Although inspired by tradition, Paalanen has nevertheless created a sound world all his own, where tradition gives way to trance-like minimalism, EDM influenced beats, Siberian throat-singing and controlled and insightful use of modern sound technology.

Bobby Oroza // soul

WED Jan 15, 22:10 @ Barn

Always with an air of crude romanticism, Bobby pushes towards an expression transcending the borders of soul and rock balladry. His dark and intimate debut single ”This Love” didn’t take long to reach the ears and hearts of a worldwide soul music community and is already a proper classic amongst the lowrider and soul collector scenes. Before finishing high school Bobby decided he needed to experience the rhythmic source that had inspired him the most, and travelled to Santiago, Cuba. Since his return he’s been producing, recording and performing music to make a living for his family. With his instant classic, debut album “This Love” Oroza has shared his strange and unique shade of Soul with the world, creating a cult-like following for his sound from Finland to sunny Southern California and beyond.

Detalji // electronic

THU Jan 16, 01:15 @ Kokomo

Krista Myllyviita first started making left-field electronic pop from her bedroom after attending her first rave with her sister at the age of 18. Up until this point, Myllyviita fulfilled her musical desires singing and playing guitar in various bands, but she was always striving for something different. And so in 2016, after a few years of exploring and developing her sound, experimental electronic project Detalji was born. This year alone Detalji has been shortlisted for Breakthrough Artist of the Year on Finnish national radio, as well as winning a Femma Award (Finnish "indie Grammy”) for Best Electronic Act and it’s this success she plans to expand upon. Detalji has her sights set on an international audience and will be playing a short run of European shows in support of the release including her debut UK date at London’s Bloc & a performance at Iceland Airwaves

FRI Jan 17, 22:40 @ Lutherse Kerk Kerkzaal

Formed by Karin Mäkiranta and Helmi Tikkanen, Karina are regarded as one of the most intriguing and well-received indie acts in Finland at the moment. Nominated for the 2019 Hyundai Nordic Music Prize, their self-produced debut album Karina was released in March 2018 to widespread critical acclaim from the Finnish media. Songs such as Bambi and Täällä sinua juhlitaan were praised as some of the greatest pop songs of the year. In 2019 Karina have played more shows than ever before — in a sold out Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, on a long spring tour across Finland, warming up for the American band Beirut in Luxembourg and, for the very first time, performing in Estonia, Norway and the UK. They recently released the debut album’s final music video for Täällä sinua juhlitaan, directed by the Lisbon/Berlin-based film director Catarina Neves Ricci.
