Mikko Joensuu @ Reeperbahn Festival 2017

The Finnish musician Mikko Joensuu is the kind of singer-songwriter who’ll easily stand out from the crowd. His debut album ”Amen 1” taps into the American folk music tradition, and it is all about deep and healing songs which at times give the listener an impression of spending time in quiet, intimate surroundings with people like Townes Van Zandt, Lee Hazlewood or Leonard Cohen. On his first record the arrangements are raw but beautiful: mostly just the piano and guitar accompany Mikko´s voice, with pedal steel guitars and soothing string sections paying a visit every now and then. His second Album "Amen 2" is more life-affirming than the first one. The music is more like mordern pop music and its sound is lighter than on "Amen 1". His latest record "Amen 3" is the final chapter of Mikko´s deeply personal and emotional journey where he tries to discover who he is. On "Amen 3", Mikko explains that “the harmonic features of Amen 1 and the popiness of Amen 2 swim into another world where I forgot the usual ways I write songs. The songs live in a bigger world where I did not analyse what happened. Amen 3 is more free. The central issues of this trioligy are the depression of human beings and their way thorugh these dark times and the question about the concept of God and how people ease their pain finding places, which comforts them.

Now, with the release of "Amen 3", it is time for the world beyond the Finnish borders to connect with the remarkable Mikko Joensuu.
