IMJA 2019 -International Music Journalism Award

For the third time in a row, Reeperbahn Festival will host the International Music Journalism Award in September 2019. It celebrates music journalism in its different facets and we highly encourage you to submit your favorite music journalism moment from the last 12 months. This can either be your own work, or the work of someone, you think deserves to be honored for the great job they have done.

An independent jury of peers and experts will evaluate the submissions and following the publications of the various shortlists the winners will be honoured at the Reeperbahn Festival Conference. The French speaking jury will be set up in collaboration with Le Bureau Export. This year’s members will be announced shortly.

Previous winners include BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs, Damon Krukowski’s „Ways Of Hearing“ podcast, French editor Belkacem Bahlouli, features about anti-semitic lyrics in German rap, musicians’ mental health, the history of disco music and German journalists like Visa Vie, Klaus Walter, Salwa Houmsi and Linus Volkmann.

Submissions will be accepted until 31 May 2019.

THE IDEA:

High-quality journalism is a valuable commodity. The environment in which excellent, original journalism can be produced is becoming ever more challenging and, particularly for young journalists, a lot less attractive.

Outstanding individual work and first-rate ongoing journalistic engagement that focuses on popular music and its business climate should and must be recognised – with special attention paid to the work of young music journalists.
