Communions (DK) Alternative rock

THURSDAY 23 SEP  | 21:50 | Danish Night, Moondoo  &  THURSDAY 23 SEP  | 13:00 | MOPO Lounge

Born in Copenhagen, but raised in Seattle before moving back to Denmark in their teens, Communions use their unique lens to interrogate their cultures and their identities on Pure Fabrication, their sophomore album released in April 2020. This 15 song, hour-long Odyssey is an intricate tapestry weaved from “cultural debris”, a reverse coming of age story, a self-reflection, and a cultural critique—Communions’ most powerful music yet.

DEAD STAR TALK (DE/DK) Rock

SATURDAY 25 SEP  | 18:15 | Molotow/Club  & FRIDAY 24 SEP  | 18:15 | MOPO Lounge

A pandemic like the one we’re dealing with can also have its unexpected good sides, especially when it forces you to be creative because everything else goes missing. With Christian, Erik, Günes and Claus, it even led to them forming their band DEAD STAR TALK, which is now making the hook-driven rock of the early noughties fit for the new golden twenties. As a Danish-German project, the guys released their debut single “Too Many Too Much” this summer, which combines everything that made this music so great back in the day: singalong choruses on top of full-on guitars, a tight interplay of bass and drums as well as impressive production by Flemming Rasmussen, producer of Blind Guardian, Metallica, Mew and Ringo Star, among others. Rasmussen himself is also already a fan of the band – meaning a first album release is imminent. Not a bad start for a band career that, until recently, was nothing more than an idea.

St.Arnaud (CA) Folk rock, indie rock

FRIDAY 24 SEP | 17:20 | UWE

Edmonton indie-pop songster St.Arnaud is a little bit of everywhere to everyone. Working alongside his brother and fellow creative, the YouTube animator GingerPale, St.Arnaud found a loving home on YouTube and Spotify with legions of eager listeners and was swept up in dozens of tour dates across Canada and the USA. His debut album was a DIY tour-de-force of fun-loving melodies overlaying themes of death, loss, and anxiety. His new album, 2022’s Love and the Front Lawn continues the sad lyrics/happy melodies framework but with a new instrumental palette. “I want the album to continue the thread of self-reflection, vulnerability, and rawness” that made up The Cost of Living (2019) says St.Arnaud, “but with notable departures in texture and form.” Steeping in the likes of the raucous and fun-loving 70s’ Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers, the ghostly and intimate Damien Jurado, and the wandering and clever narratives of Charlotte Cornfield, Ian didn’t forget about his innate talent for writing singable hooks and to practice his sha-la-las. Moving through self-doubt, loving, leaving and being left, and anxiously wasting away through some of the best years of one’s life, Love and the Front Lawn is the catchiest self-reminder to be kinder to yourself, to let go and try to enjoy where you are. Working with producer Graham Lessard (Basia Bulat, Stars) brings out the texture and dark corners of the songs through slippery slide guitar and keyboards through. By the release of his debut album at 24, St.Arnaud found himself to be an old hand on the folk festival circuit, a University graduate in Neuroscience, an accidental overdose survivor, and at a loss for what to do with himself next. The previous fall his bandmate, friend, and at times antagonist, was hit by a train, thus dissolving his Americana/folk pop trio North of Here. To honour the loss of his friend, St.Arnaud reworked and rewrote the songs he had written for the already hauntingly titled The Cost of Living. Harkening back to 60s protest folk and 70s early indie, Ian’s beaming, clever lyrics belay the more cerebral themes of the songs. Simply orchestrated and impeccably composed, St.Arnaud takes head-on themes of death, loss and resilience with sardonic humour and heart-on-the-sleeve, puppy-love honesty.

Casper Clausen (DK) Indie pop, Alternative pop

SATURDAY 25 SEP | 22:10 | St. Pauli-Kirche

As the front man of Efterklang, Casper Clausen left no stone unturned over the last two decades in his quest to take post-rock to the next level. Starting with the debut of his band “Tripper” (2004) to the works of art for 4AD, the singer, songwriter, keyboardist and composer has often taken lessons from the great storybook of modern melancholic music without tripping up over said stories, and which he is so capably tells in his full-bodied fashion in pieces like the new indietronica title "Used to Think". With his ever-changing styles, differing dramatic approaches, Clausen has always and consistently pushed himself and with this year’s solo debut “Better Way” he has, after a long time once again paved the way for new forms of expression. The contrasts of life: alienation and love, distance and intimacy, past and present - all of this is reflected in his sound, which is chiseled as much by avant-folk and neo-psychedelia as it is by ambient and pop. Finally, this man is back and here to be admired live and detached from his band projects.

DOPHA (DK) Indie pop

FRIDAY 24 SEP | 18:00 | Knust/Lattenplatz &  SATURDAY 25 SEP | 19:00 | DANISH NIGHT, INDRA    &  THURSDAY 23 SEP | 13:45 | MOPO Lounge

It all began when her parents bought her a karaoke machine that could record on tape, which she spend all her time doing from her room in the small town of Romalt, Denmark. She decided to buy a red 1964 Fender Mustang by the age of 13 when she saw her idol Norah Jonas with a red Mustang. Dopha writes present and heartfelt songs with a gritty beat and has succeeded in creating her own identity, which is firmly rooted in Scandinavian melancholia. In Jan 2021 Dopha released her critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Game’ that received almost exclusively five star reviews in local press. Leading media predict her a huge future as Denmark’s next big popstar with international potential. This is underlined by SR1 & Antenne Thüringen naming the album as “Album der Woche”. The album was released after several popular singles, critically acclaimed live shows and a performance at Danish national TV hosted by the Danish Royal Family with the song ‘The Game’, which also ended the year with a nomination to ‘Song Of The Year’ at the Critic’s Award, ’Steppeulven’. Furthermore, Dopha was nominated as ‘Talent of The Year’ and ‘Best Pop Composer of The Year’ at the annual award show ’Carl Prisen’, and won the latter.

Joachim Franz Büchner Band (DE) Indie/pop

Spoon and the Forkestra (DE) Indie, rock

FRIDAY 24 SEP | 20:30 | Grüner Jäger   &   FRIDAY 24 SEP | 14:00 | MOPO Lounge

It’s a wondrous nostalgia that surrounds German indie-rock duo Spoon and the Forkestra. Spoon and the Forkestra turn their stages into a playroom: colorful and always a little messy, but streaked with gloomy shadows that dance on the walls. Folky elements meet psychedelic melancholy, the freedom of punk meets the sensuality of jazz and soul. We are experiencing a musical embrace – both slightly beautiful and a little gnawing at the same time; a reverberating kind of intensity stimulating awareness for the long-gone.

ML Buch (DK) Experimental, pop rock

THURSDAY 23 SEP | 18:30 | DANISH NIGHT, MOONDOO

ML Buch is the moniker of Danish composer, singer and producer Marie Louise Buch. Her luminous debut album ‘Skinned’ was released via Anyines in 2020 and is a striking collision of experimental and pop sounds. Buch casts yearning melodies, vaporous guitars, and nostalgic keyboard sounds into the wide-open spaces of songs, letting them sit uneasily in her not-quite-synthpop productions. Look forward to hearing the music from ‘Skinned’ and new songs well served by the adventurous instrumentals ML Buch creates as connective tissue.

The four powerful women of KONVENT deliver THE definitive Death Doom debut of 2020! Could Copenhagen become the new death doom capital? If so, it`s all because of Konvent! Founded in 2015, the fourpiece stoically trudges through the blackest mires – following in the footsteps of Candlemass, Paradise Lost, Cult of Luna and Black Breath, who all unleashed the bleakest horror on mankind in the early 90s. Rikke Emilie List`s guttural vocals and tenacious riffing combined with menacingly heavy production make the debut by these four Danish women a massive extreme metal highlight of early 2020.

The Budapest-based world music band incorporates a hilarious number of genres into its sound: speed-folk freak-punk spiced up with Hungarian, Balkanic and Gipsy elements. From the USA to Spain, China to Japan, in the last couple of years this real power boost band made the audience dance about a thousand times. FRIDAY 24 SEP | 12:45 - 13:15 | @ HOTS Spotlight: Hungary, HÄKKEN    &  FRIDAY 23 SEP | 16:45 | MOPO Lounge

Listen to the call of the Iron Peak. It is calling for you to find your true self in a world you want to be isolated from. It is calling for you to make peace with yourself, with the inevitable end. It is calling for Hungarian singer-songwriter Dávid Makó, who redefined himself as THE DEVIL’S TRADE a few years ago, embarking on a long journey with his deeply personal and dark, sometimes doom infused folk songs. Be it the folk of the Appalachians, the tales of Hungarian and Transylvanian traditionals, THE DEVIL’S TRADE fuses his past of metal and his roots laying deep in the folk songs of his immediate surroundings. Very much like how the Iron Peak, a mountaintop both metaphorical and literal is calling for Makó, he is calling for you to share his rituals of loves and hopes lost and found along the pilgrimage of his. It is after all, the journey itself that matters the most, and how you adapt. From basements in his hometown of Budapest, to all corners of Europe, stages small and big, THE DEVIL’S TRADE has been relentlessly walking on his path finding his voice and calling, and that is to let listeners to glimpse into himself through his heart wrenching songs.

Meskerem Mees (BE) Indie folk

WEDNESDAY 22 SEP | 20:30 - 21:15 | @ Nochtspeicher

Meskerem Mees enjoys being compared to big names on an almost daily basis. The Belgian singer-songwriter with the distinct velvet voice has earned a reputation in her homeland as an outstanding interpreter of great songs, while her name is mentioned frequently in the same breath as Nina Simone or Joni Mitchell. And rightly so. Her talents are on full display at her intimate concerts, but also for example on the major Studio Brussel radio station’s Morning Show: her brilliant vocals and guitar-playing are delivered in a reserved yet self-assured style, she drifts far away and yet remains present, in the moment. She brings this presence to the stage with a natural-born ease which she then seems to channel intuitively into songs with the elfin innocence of “Joe” or “Seasons Shift”. Other than that it’s just the cello of her friend Febe that sometimes appears, brought in by Mees sometimes for a few bars. That’s all Mees needs to make you forget everything for a few minutes.

WILLIAM FITZSIMMONS (US) Indie folk, singer-songwriter

FRIDAY 24 SEP | 22:00  | St. Michaelis Kirche  & SATURDAY 25 SEP | 22:00  | Imperial Theater

Most people actually choose a career in music - William Fitzsimmons had little choice. Although he had studied psychology and worked as a therapist for many years, being born into a home, in which his father's self-crafted church organ stood next to the piano, a trombone and some guitars, the highly talented singer-songwriter learned at a very young age what it means not only to play an instrument, but to master it. Which left its marks. No matter if banjo or ukulele, melodica or mandolin - when it comes to his heartbreakingly honest indie-folk, Fitzsimmons will preferably lace any instrument into the record himself and has proven to be right in doing so again and again. From his cult debut “Until When We Are Ghosts” (2005) to this year's “Ready the Astronaut”, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s all-rounder encompasses an oeuvre of a thousand shades, which in its compositional and stylistic independence is not without reason comparable to the shining figures of American folk music like Iron& Wine, Sufjan Stevens or the late and great Elliot Smith.

GLAUQUE (BE) Electro hip-hop, French alternative

THURSDAY 23 SEP | 18:30 - 19:10 | Mojo Club

Five boys from Namur in Belgium have been reinventing Francophone hip hop over the past two years, and hardly anyone beyond their country’s borders has taken note. Strange, considering that singles such as the radiant, dawn-like “ID8” or the rousing, electro-heavy “Plane” could easily qualify as international surprise hits. Their compatriots have clearly understood this and allowed Glauque to lay down memorable performances at Dour Festival and Les Ardentes Festival. On stage, the five-piece is able to communicate the power of its songs with a captivating lightness that somehow renders the tracks both danceable and pensive. If you want to stand out nowadays, it’s not enough to master different styles and sounds – you actually have to combine them into a meaningful mélange. And that’s exactly what Glauque manage with ease.

Schlindwein (DE) Neo-classical, deep house

SATURDAY 25 SEP | 22:15 | Resonanzraum

Schlindwein is a Berlin based pianist, composer and producer. Being taught in classical piano from early childhood on and making his mark in electronic music as a producer and Live-Act, he lives in two musical worlds which clash in his tracks to form a new symbiosis. Classically inspired compositions and electronic sounds merge into his own world of dreamy, lush atmospheres while creating seamless transitions between Neoclassic, Electronica and Deep House. With his second album „Piano Tales“ he has created another musical journey where he is exploring the sonic possibilities of his main instrument in the electronic realm. And again Schlindwein has worked with NHOAH and his Label R.O.T Records in top class studios in Berlin and Vienna to deliver a production at the highest level. Each track has its own distinct character, going from intimate and vulnerable to energetic and up-lifting, while always keeping the recognizable melodic piano lines at heart. His music was used for feature films and TV productions like the series finale of "How To Get Away With Murder" which aired on ABC in May 2020.

Goss is one of the absolute most promising artists on the Danish music scene. Goss released his extremely critically acclaimed debut album ‘Group Therapy’ at the end of 2020, which in Soundvenue's words "should cement him as one of the most exciting pop artists in Denmark”. Goss has since 2017 been on a journey that has offered sold-out concerts, a European support tour for Mura Masa and not least performances at e.g., Roskilde Festival and Heartland Festival. Goss debuted in 2016 with the single 'I Want To Know ?????' - a single that went straight into #1 on Hype Machine and was followed up by his debut EP 'Healthcare (2017), which with international support from BBC Radio1, The Line of Best Fit and CLASH Magazine gained his way to a following outside of the Danish borders and captivated both international media, fans and critics. Mulay (DE) Pop

FRIDAY 24 SEP | 20:30 | Headcrash  & SATURDAY 25 SEP | 22:15 | Grüner Jäger

Focusing on life in all its dimensions – this is one of the artistic concerns of Berlin-based artist Mulay. She draws on sources of inspiration that require courage and assertiveness, compelling her to follow her own path. FKA Twigs, Sevdaliza and SZA are just a few of the artists who have influenced her soulful, but very physical style. "In my imagination, music is always closely connected to the visual," says the multidisciplinary artist. We can hear and see this not just in the haunting sound of tracks like "Medusa" or "Antracyte", but also in her compelling stage presence. Her audio-visual settings confront us with the dark sides of our soul, exploring such feelings as guilt and betrayal, self-hatred and acceptance of our own fallibility. The music captures this in a fascinating combination of downtempo, R&B, soul and emotive trip-hop that is hard to resist.

Three multi-instrumentalists from Budapest appear to play an impromptu set at some festival out in the sticks in Hungary, smoke up a hefty joint with the boss of Blunt Shelter Records, and wham, one of the wackiest fusion albums in recent jazz history is in the can - after just one all-night session. “Jazzbois Goes Blunt” was the impudent name given to the ensuing album, which set the fuse on the filter. Sepia-coloured Rhodes cuddle up to almost sexual bass lines on Jazzbois, a brilliantly produced dream team of Akai MPC and the choicest of organic drums as well as stylistically confident arrangements. This combo transcends hip-hop and jazz on an unimagined level.

L'Éclair (CH) Progressive funk

FRIDAY 24 SEP | 18:30 | Mojo Club

L’Eclair is a cosmic instrumental six piece from Geneva, Switzerland. Their origins can be traced back to 2015 when, while studying in London, keyboardist Sebastien Bui and guitarist Stefan Lilov recorded several demos together in their hotel room. Hearing something special in this batch of songs, they returned to Geneva and enlisted Yavor Lilov (drums), Alain Sandri (percussion, keyboard), Quentin Pilet (percussion) and Elie Ghersinu (bass) to flesh out these ideas into a full fledged band. The relentless grooves, classic tones and silky smooth melodies were instantly present, and L’Eclair was born. Their debut record Cruise Control was released in 2017, to positive reviews. Touring extensively in Switzerland and abroad, they further honed their trademark sound while steadily growing their audience. They soon convened in Haarlem, Netherlands to record with famed studio wizard Jasper Geluk (Altin Gun, Jacco Gardner, Allah Las). These sessions became their second studio album entitled Polymood, which was released in 2018 on US label Beyond Beyond is Beyond, opening up even more opportunities for L’Eclair. On the heels of Polymood, L’Eclair continued to tour across Europe, playing in the Netherlands, UK, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, and France, and quickly becoming a live staple on the festival circuit. Appearances at Montreux Jazz Festival, Paléo, Kilbi, Les Transmusicales de Rennes, Eurosonic, and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival gained them critical acclaim and a cult following.

Currently looking for: Booking (US, Asia), live opportunities (WW)
